A path to ending the war seemed increasingly illusory, as peace talks with Russia went from <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/05\/world\/europe\/russia-ukraine-peace-talks.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">yielding no results<\/a> to being put on hold. That meant Kyiv needed to prepare to fight indefinitely, even as vital financial support from the European Union <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/20\/world\/europe\/euro-loan-ukraine-hungary-obstacle.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remained frozen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">On Thursday, a breakthrough finally arrived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">After Hungary <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/22\/world\/europe\/eu-loan-ukraine-pipeline-hungary.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dropped its opposition to a $106 billion E.U. loan<\/a> to Ukraine the day before, European leaders unblocked the funds. The money, which had been held up since December, will cover a large share of Ukraine\u2019s financial needs over the next two years. Once those funds are exhausted, an additional $117 billion from the bloc\u2019s long-term budget is expected to be allocated to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-ac37hb evys1bk0\">Taken together, the pledges appear to put Ukraine on firmer financial footing at least through 2029, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cesukraine\/posts\/pfbid02kbK5Z192VDThEbUwvBEjdNVSWV4h7NsL3gQHz4HAiKPGP1arw6c2EZKJCF4BXmsGl?rdid=xTNwTchd7kgu1uBH#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">said<\/a> Hlib Vyshlinsky, head of the Kyiv-based Center for Economic Strategy.
