Ukraine counts on new IMF support programme worth $15bn

Ukraine and the IMF have begun negotiations on a new multiannual extensive financial support programme worth over $15 billion.

This was announced by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, following a meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and the IMF team.

The meeting focused on the implementation of the Monitoring Programme, including the structural benchmarks prescribed by the IMF for Ukraine.

It is planned that the programme with the IMF will consist of two parts:

  • immediate financial support;
  • support for structural reforms that will facilitate recovery.

“The news is very positive for Ukraine. We are following the only acceptable scenario for us to work with the IMF this year. Ukraine has to repay its debt to the Fund, and receiving funds under the new programme is the only way to do it painlessly,” commented Maria Repko, Deputy Director of the Centre for Economic Strategies.
