Will EU membership destroy Ukrainian farmers?

In short, no.

The European model of agriculture provides enough flexibility to keep economic efficiency as a priority.

Even after Ukraine becomes a member of the European Union, Ukrainian farmers will be able to continue to focus on efficient mass production and exports to non-EU countries.

At the same time, small organic and ecological producers will be able to receive additional payments under the EU CAP.

Perhaps this can become one of the main lines of our negotiating position – Ukraine should take care of economic efficiency so that other EU members have enough resources to take care of the so-called “non-economic goals“.

In addition, we should be happy that Ukraine’s accession negotiations are starting at a time when the EU CAP is much more free-market oriented than in the past.

So, despite many myths, the new opportunities that Ukraine’s accession to the EU will bring to domestic farmers outweigh the discomfort of change.
