Ukrainian civil society and EU should work together during the accession

CES Director Hlib Vyshlinsky, during a recent panel discussion by Isar Ednannia, said that European partners have been keeping Ukraine at a distance for years, hinting that EU accession would not happen in the short term.

The situation was changed by the full-scale invasion of Russia and the granting of candidate status, which significantly accelerated the EU accession process. To successfully complete it, the public sector has to work together with EU representatives, focusing on these aspects:

Communication. The public sector should communicate with EU representatives about Ukraine’s needs at all possible levels.

In particular, building strong relationships with EU business associations and companies is important to avoid trade conflicts – like the agricultural one in the Spring.

Expertise. Analysts need resources and time to understand European legislation. This should be facilitated by both the government and donors.

It is also necessary to involve Ukrainians who have moved abroad. They can work on European integration issues in NGOs or international projects that help Ukraine.
