Centre for Economic Strategy cordially invites you to join the discussion “Did the labour law protect Ukrainians during the corona crisis? Analysis and policy recommendations”. It will be held on Wednesday, February 24, at 12:00 EET in Zoom.

The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the Ukrainian economy into one of the worst recessions in decades. The abruptly imposed nationwide quarantine in mid-March caught many businesses off guard: as non-essential shops, entertainment, hospitality, and transportation services remained shut for weeks, employers faced an unprecedented trade-off between keeping the staff and keeping the business afloat. The unemployment rate increased from 8.9% to 9.3%.

How did the anti-crisis legislation amendments affect the situation on the labour market? Did the Labour Code of Ukraine protect people from being fired? Did businesses have enough flexibility under current labour legislation to adapt to the new economic situation?

We will discuss these issues during an online event and present the analysis of the Centre for Economic Strategy on business adaptation mechanisms during the COVID-crisis. We will also present our policy recommendations on how to improve labour legislation taking into consideration the interests of employees and businesses.
